Red Clay Backing Track

Red Clay Backing Track

Lesson Overview

Just as you might assume, this is a backing track for Freddie Hubbard’s famous song Red Clay. Utilizing very unique chords, Cm11-Bbm11, Dbsus7-Ebsus7-Fsus7-Gsus7, this tune is all about suspended sounds and “quartal” harmony. In other words, try to begin thinking about some of the chords as intervals of a 4th, rather than the way most players approach improvisation (based on 3rds). Run the arpeggios a couple of times to get a feel for this new harmonic structure, and you’ll be right at home once the song starts.
